Margrét Hrafnsdóttir is an active performer in the Icelandic music scene and has premiered works by composers including Ingibjörg Azima, Oliver Kentish, and Steingrímur Þórhallsson. She has received grants from the Wagner Society in Stuttgart, Hlaðvarpinn, the Icelandic Music Fund, and has been awarded the Artist Salary (Listamannalaun).
Margrét has given solo recitals in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, and Sweden, presenting programs that range from rarely performed repertoire to folk songs and a wide variety of theatrical and dramatic opera music.
In 2007, she released the album Hjartahljóð with cellist Ólöf Sigursveinsdóttir, featuring Icelandic folk songs. In 2015, she released Vorljóð á Ýli, a collection of songs by Ingibjörg Azima arranged for an unusual chamber ensemble featuring bassoon, accordion, clarinet, double bass, and cello.
Her most recent release, LOGN, came out in October and also features music by Ingibjörg. Margrét has appeared in several Icelandic operas, performing roles such as Freyja in Þrymskviða by Jón Ásgeirsson and the Witch in Ár og Öld by Þórunn Guðmundsdóttir.
In October, she will premiere the opera/story-poem Urta by Ingibjörg Azima, with text by Gerður Kristný. In 2026, she will premiere the opera/monodrama Medea by Arngerður María Árnadóttir.
